A whole new batch of fun...

So I got roped into another month of Yahoo Personals. (Basically I was roped in by my stupidity...I didn't unsubscribe before it auto-charged me for another month, dammit...) And so I'm taking advantage of it, trolling about for new men, seeing if I can find a decent date to go out on in the next million years. And I have been chatting with a very nice guy for about 2 weeks now...seems relatively smart, definitely funny, no kids, my age, cute, etc, etc...and that's a good thing. But my profile is still active, and I'm still receiving communiation from other men who are interested. Which is nice.

But the problem is, they seem to have grown up in the part of the world where they don't teach grammar or spelling skills. Or logical thought process. This one gentleman sent me a note that said "I'am a blah blah, with a blah blah...I'am interested in hearing back from you..."

Um, wha?

Ok, first of all, it's either "I am" or "I'm". There's no such word as "I'am". And then I looked at his profile, and he's got the conjunction totally fucked up all through that thing. So I wrote him a nice note back thanking him for his interest, and telling him that I'm really not into dating guys who have kids that live at home at all, and then I said I didn't want to be rude, but rather just wanted to help him as much as I could, and I told him about the "I'am" not being a word thing.

And that's the other thing that happened. Suddenly I'm getting contacted by men who have children, either at home part of the time, or they actually live with their dads. I state specifically that I'm not interested in dating men with kids in my profile. But these guys don't even acknowledge that sort of stuff. (When I initiate communication with a guy I'm interested in, I at least make a comment to them that I know their profile states a desire for a girl with a body type that I don't fit into, and tell them that "I know I don't fit the body type you're interested in, but..." Most guys I've contacted in that respect have then changed their body-type preferences to include "voluptuous" or "a few extra pounds" in their profile...which is very smart of them, I think.) Which means they aren't reading my profile thoroughly, which is maddening.

So the moral of the day is that if you are an internet dater, like myself, you might want to make sure your profile doesn't have spelling errors, or grammar issues, and for gosh sakes, read the profiles of the people you want to contact! What if they smoke 3 packs a day and you have asthma? What if they have 4 cats, and you're allergic? Don't just respond to a picture, fellas. Sheesh!

kids used to scare me too, but i'm over it. my advice is to not limit yourself just because a guy has kids. guys and their kids can be great. i never thought i would say that, but hey...if a guy is worth being with, you're going to want to be with him whether or not he has the kidlets.

Lyn, believe me I have tried this angle with anyone and everyone since I am a single chick with kids and have seen puhlenty of men who are absolutely everything the same as me...until I get to the part where they say if it's ok or not for the person they are looking for to have kids and they say 'no.' WTF not? It's not like I am BRINGING them on the dates with me! I realize it is always a situation where it could turn into LTR and that freaks them out to have kids involved, but what if they had met me out and about and fell head-over-heals and THEN found out I have kids? They'd forget about it that instant? Whatever.

Dude, you can cancel the account and they have to allow you to keep it open through the time you paid and just not renew you at the end of it. Only because I've done it so many times with Match...

Dude, I know. I apparently forgot to do that last month. Der on me, right? :P But I'm fully aware of how to cancel the auto-payment resubscribe thingy. I've been doing this for many years, 'member? I just get busy, and can't do it from work, for some reason, and then by the time I get home, I completely forget, and BAH! Big mess, and $25 later, I'm mad at myself. This is the second time it's happened to me in the 3.5 years I've been doing it.

And no. kids. EVER. Just not ok. The man/men I finally click with will feel the same way I do about children, which is that it's great that other people have them, but otherwise, they're not for me. I could never be a mom to anyone, especially someone else's kids. So it's just not even an option. Unless they're completely grown up kids. I'm fine with those. :)

I've had the worst luck with the spelling/grammar/lack of looking at my profile thing. It's even worse of the "alternative" dating sites. (You'd think if you had a good chance of getting lucky, especially if it involves an alternative-kinda-lucky, you'd do everything you could to impress the girl.) I hate to say this, because I have many male friends who I love and who are smart, but it's started to make me wonder about men in general. On the other hand, men who have posted to my blog say the same is true in personals with women--illiterate, dumb short statements that prove they haven't read the profile. So I guess it's a function of personals, not a function of men.

Either way, it's horribly frustrating.

Here is your problem: the fact that the men who think that I'am is an acceptable conjunction in this or any language are the same men who seemingly respond to your ad with no regard to your preferences should tell you something: THESE PEOPLE ARE ILLITERATE. They obviously can't spell, write or maintain a second grader's grasp on the english language, and they most definitely can't read because HOW CAN YOU OVERLOOK SOMETHING AS IMPORTANT AS "NO KIDS"? It's not like they're saying, "look, I know you stated that you prefer guys with green eyes, but I have hazel eyes and I think we might be able to work something out despite that tiny flaw." These are CHILDREN. A really big deal, all things considered. Especially for those of us who do not consider ourselves ready to enter a relationship with a man carrying baggage. Personally, I'm not ready to be anybody's step mama, so a man with kids would be ABSOLUTELY out of the question, I don't care how cool or sweet or charming or wonderful he is. Direct these bustas to Hooked on Phonics and move on!
