Pine nuts = fruit of the devil?

As of yesterday, most things I eat taste bitter. Really, really gross bitter, along with the usual flavor they have already. Like, an english muffin with egg and deli sliced turkey tastes like all that stuff, but also has a bitter punch to it. Last night, buffalo strip steak with leeks and white beans? Delicious! Except for the bitter chaser.

It's continuing today. Lovely. So I looked it up online, and apparently it can come from GERD (which I don't have), or it can also be from eating pine nuts. Which we tend to do on a relatively regular basis. We had some last Thursday on a salad. They were effing delicious.

But if they're the reason my mouth and tastebuds are all fucked up, I'm afraid I might have to give them up! ::sobs:: I already had to give up my damned Greek yogurt! Why is my body hating on me like this???

Has anyone else ever had something this random happen? Tell me about it, so I'll feel less freaky!

I never experienced that, but I'll tell you, when I was pregnant, I could actually TASTE THE PINE in the pine nuts. I thought there was something wrong with the batch I was eating. I was all. "you don't taste that? It tastes like a mother fucking christmas tree!" And the hubs looked at me like I was insane.

Yeah, Leo thinks its hilarious that I'm having a problem. Makes me kinda glad he broke out with a damned cold sore yesterday! Mwahahahaha!

Things were slightly better this morning than they were yesterday. But it's still there, a little. So weird!

We (unfortunately) don't eat enough pine nuts to tell, but Robb has been having weird food reactions only we don't know WHICH food, which is freaking annoying cause I have to stop using random ingredients until we can know for sure if that particular one is the culprit. In his case we think it's an allergy of sorts, his tongue gets red spots and gets tender... weird, right? The current theory is nuts in general, but it keeps changing.

Umm, nope. I have never had anything odd or strange happen to me ever. You are, I hate to say (I really do), fucked up in many ways and this must be one of them.

Damn. Sucks for you!

No one is allowed to use bleach around me before I've had my morning coffee! If I smell bleach and then drink coffee, the coffee tastes terrible. I discovered this a few years ago when I was on a bout of swimming in the mornings. I'd swim, shower, then stop for coffee on the way to work. I kept complaining to Latte Land staff that my coffee was burned. Then I had my Oprah Aha moment. That's pretty weird, right?

Hahahahahaha! Yes, Cate. Definitely pretty weird. And I'm glad you figured it out!

Layla, seems like nuts are a definite possibility in Robb's case. I would be so sad if I had to give up nuts! Boo!

Twin, SHUT IT! :P

Its actually not all pine nuts, just some that do it. I remembered reading an article about this a while back with the conclusion being it mattered where they came from if they had a tendency to cause the reaction.

Here's a good link kind of explaining it: http://pinchmysalt.com/2009/05/02/pine-nuts-left-a-bitter-taste-in-my-mouth/

Yeah, the stuff I read said it tended to happen with pine nuts from China, although that wasn't a totally proven theory.

The pine nuts we buy from Walmart are from Turkey. But we forgot to grab them one week, and bought the bulk pine nuts from Whole Foods instead. I have no idea where they are from...

prolly china....whole foods have gotten bad about that, i've noticed.

I just read that blog post, and some of the subsequent comments, and it's so funny to see that this happens to so many people! Like a lot in the comments, this bitter taste thing happened to me, but not my husband.

And we bought a new package of pine nuts from Walmart this week before I knew about the correlation, so I'll be eating them again, dammit! Hopefully, the Turkish ones are nicer to my taste buds. :)

Bwwahahahahaaa! I can't believe fuckin' PINE NUTS are causing you to have issues with taste buds.

At least Fin has been helpful and directed you to a place where you may have discovered a way around said issue.

It's so odd!

Cate: your bleachy coffee story made me giggle.
