UPDATE: Bring your child (a.k.a. germ factory) to work day: A quick Googling told me that this is a nationwide affliction...

So today is (national?) Take Your Child To Work Day. We have rules for it here at my company, but "rules' is a relative word when it comes to a multi-child household, I guess. I dunno...

The issue I have with this kind of thing isn't that there are KIDS at my work. Boo! Hiss! ICKY!

I mean, I can see how that would be a logical conclusion for many who know me, and are already aware of my strong dislike for small people of the child variety. But I can assure you, I think that the practice is a good thing, when done properly.

  • I think the kids that are brought to work should be older than, say, 12.
  • I think that the kid should be well-informed about what kind of work mom or dad does.
  • I think that there should be efforts made by the parent to get the kid involved in learning something about their job, whether it be a small item or a big one. Depends on the capacity for information the kid has, of course!
  • I think, also, that there should be a limit to the amount of kids each parent can bring in. That just seems like a no-brainer, but maybe that's 'cuz I work with a guy who has 6 young kids in his household, and it was actually a joke as to whether he'd be loaning any of them out for the day to anyone that needed a kid in order to participate in the activities our workplace is hosting for the day.

But when I saw some dude walking into the building with 3 sloppily-dressed kids, 2 of which are clearly under the age of 12, with the youngest carrying a pillow and a blanket? Dude, YOU'RE DOIN' IT WRONG.

This shouldn't just be a day off from school for all the children in the household. This should be a well thought out process whereby the parent taking the child to work should be interested in actually imparting some form of interest in work to their young offspring. A way to let kids see that their parents have to be serious in their job, but that they also enjoy going to work because of A, B, and C items.

Does this make sense to anyone else? Am I just talking out of my ass because I (gasp!) am childless and this makes it obviously easier for me to assign these kinds of loosely bound "rules" to the whole concept?

UPDATE at 1 p.m. CST: How ironic is it that my boss is in a meeting all afternoon and has asked me to watch his 13 year old daughter for him? Hahahaha! (She's nice. Reminds me of my nieces. She's a good mix between the two...kinda cracking me up right now!)

UPDATED: Earthquake in Cali!

Just got a text from the twin 2 mins ago about a "big ol' earthquake" they had there at about 10:30 a.m. PST. Still waiting to hear more, but she's alright, it seems. Likely the texts will get a bit spaced out here as other people contact their families and friends...

Off to check the news!

Update: There is no news. It was a relatively small earthquake to everyone outside the south OC area, it sound like. But since it was shallow (2.5 miles down) and close to Twin (about 5 or 6 miles, maybe?), it seemed pretty big to her. Oh well! Non one is hurt! Yay!

Shit. I'm not going to be able to carry it like Ashley Judd can. :(

I wound up going to the health clinic today for help. I've been getting pain in my chest like I did the last time I got sick like this back in March. That time, I wound up having such bad pain, I thought I was going to have to go to the ER. I wasn't at that point yet, this time, but I have no patience for the chest pain (and it also freaks me out a lil bit), so I figured going to the doctor sooner rather than later was the best plan.

I have that bacterial infection in my lungs again.

I also have infected shit in my sinuses.

And an ear infection, to boot! (Which is weird to me...I'm thirty-goddam-eight! I shouldn't be getting ear infections anymore, right???)

So they prescribed antibiotics AND a steroid. I don't know what the combo of those two things do that the one antibiotic can't do on its own, but there must be a reason for it. I also have to start using a nasal spray to help me with my allergies, because that's what's causing me to get sick so often, apparently.

I didn't know I was having a problem with allergies, but ok!

Anyway, life is boring around here for the time being. I can't go to the gym, and I have barely been able to get out to work, so I have no stories. Nothing fun is happening with me.

Maybe next week.

I might take comparison pics from before I take the steroids, and after I take them, so we can laugh at how puffy I get.

Or I can cross my fingers and hope that the puffiness doesn't that even possible? I dunno.

It's a toss up for me.

My favorite kind of person is either:

- Someone who thinks they're funny when they say disgusting things that are, for some reason, funny to them, and seem to never learn from the shocked/grossed out/odd looks on the faces of those they are trying so very hard to entertain


- Someone who keeps trying to do evil things to me, like put me in a cage with a hungry bear. Or wake me up 10 minutes after I've fallen asleep with something like a gunshot wound to the thigh

I just can't decide between the two! Fortunately, I've never really run into the 2nd type of person. So that might be what makes it hard for me to decide.

(My in laws are in town for a few days. While spending time with my mother in law kept me up far beyond my bedtime last night doing enjoyable things like watching TV and chatting about the craziness of raising 5 boys, spending time with my father in law is...a little more challenging. That's all. But they're in town to do wonderful things like help Leo with the yard, since they both know a hellofa lot more about gardening than I do, and a fair amount more than Leo does. So it all evens out in the end, really. I suppose...)

I hate to tell you, WebMD, but....

You know how when you're looking up symptoms of something that you're dealing with that happen to be kind of a sensitive internal-type issue that you've never dealt with before, and you go looking for things like "blood in stool without pain" on Google, and it sends you to a WebMD* "symptoms" page that describes anything like foul smelling stool or "flatulence that has a sewer-like stench" as being something to be concerned about, and then you think back over your life and try to remember the time when stuff coming out of your a-hole DIDN'T smell bad, and you can't really remember any?

Yeah, what do you do then? ::scratches head::

(Personally, I asked some friends what they thought I should do, and one of them has a husband that's suffered from Crohn's for many years, and he gave me some good advice. But still...the internet is weird.)

*It might not've been WebMD I wound up on. It was just a WebMD-like place. It's been a couple of days since I searched...I can't remember that far in the past at this time of day, dammit.

What's Your Number? An odd review.

Me: What movies do we have left at home?

Leo: That one that your sister told us we should watch, and then the other is a romantic thing that someone wrote on is a bad movie.

Me: Wait…what? Someone wrote on the disc that it was a bad movie?

Leo: Well, on the disc pouch, yeah.

[Later, while sitting down to dinner, picking out the movie to watch…]
Me: Ahahahaha! This says “trashy movie”, which doesn’t necessarily mean it’s BAD. Just means this person is judging it as being trashy.

Leo: Ooooh, true. Wonder why it’s trashy?

Me: I would assume it’s because it’s a movie that’s based around the number of guys the main character has had sex with. But…if you think that’s a trashy topic, then why rent the movie?

Leo: People are dumb.

We watched “What’s Your Number” last night. It was goofy, and kind of corny at times, and kind of awesome at others, and really made me wish I could have an ass like Anna Faris’s. Let’s see what the Netflix summary of the movie says, shall we?

Ally is a twentysomething who begins to suspect that her one true soul mate may be among the many lovers she has left in the dust. Turning to her neighbor for help, Ally begins a quest to locate her exes to see which one might be Mr. Right.”

Ah…I can see how that can be misconstrued into being something about unicorns and rainbows and how romantic it is to marry your one true love and not have many lovers throughout your life.

Oh, wait. Maybe that part about the main character looking for love “among the many lovers she left in the dust” would be a clue? I mean, yeah, this might not be a movie to show your 10 year old daughter and her friends at a sleepover, or anything, but hell…I watched Bachelor Party (Tom Hanks) when I was 11 or 12, and I turned out semi-normal. I limit my trashy behavior to very select moments in time, thank you very much.

To sum up: people are weird. And I'd give the movie about 3.5 stars out of 5.

Update on my Primal Blueprint life - 3 month checkpoint

So, I eat "weirdly" now*. I've mentioned the Primal Blueprint once or twice on the blog since I started it in January, but only once or twice as promised in this post back in January. Here are some of the major bullet points about my new "life" now:

1.) I don't eat grains. (This is not 100%...I eat croutons on salads from time to time - maybe once per week, or so, and sometimes, the call of a cupcake or half a donut is just too much for me to bear! And beer hasn't completely been eschewed as of yet. So I'd say I'm about 90% grain free at this point.)

2.) I "lift heavy things" twice a week for 45 minutes.

3.) I sprint every 7 - 10 days or so (which for me means warm up for 5 minutes, and then alternate running as fast as I can handle it for 30 seconds, and then walk for 15 seconds...I do that for 5 - 10 minutes, and then I cool down for 5 minutes, and then I die on the floor of my basement)

4.) I eat yummy fats like ghee (clarified butter), avocado, bacon fat, duck fat, olive oil, and coconut oil. Also raw cheddar cheese. And full fat greek yogurt from Trader Joe's. That shit is so good, y'all.

5.) I eat meals that consist of protein, fat, and veggies.

6.) I fast once or twice a week. This means that I eat dinner at about 6:30 or 7 p.m. on Thursday night, and then don't eat again until 12 p.m. on Friday. I drink iced tea, but that's it. This week, I also did this on Tuesday morning.

7.) I get out in the sun for a few minutes of as many days of the week as I can. Preferably duing a short walk during the workday.

Here are the basic reasons why I do what I do:

I avoid grains because they fuck with my insulin production.

I lift weights because it's a challenge to my body and helps me lean out and get strong.

I sprint to kind of shock my system every week or so, and wake things up. I'm not very good at sprinting yet. I'm working on doing it for longer periods of time over the next few months.

I eat "good" fats because they are super-satiating. Which means that I eat fewer calories overall because I'm just not hungry for them. Also, they make everything else I eat taste even more delicious.

My carbs come from things like vegetables and fruits. I eat white rice about once or twice a month. I eat sweet potatoes, white potatoes, and squash when I crave them. I cannot WAIT for cherry season, but right now I eat a lot of blackberries, plums, nectarines, and apples. We have fish around twice a week. We eat a lot of buffalo and grass fed steak we order online. We eat lamb about once a week. Standard side dishes for us are green beans, broccolini with parmesan, brussels sprouts, artichokes, and mashed pumpkin squash. We eat quite a variety of food, basically.

Fasting is done for many reasons throughout the Primal Blueprint community, but for me, it's more about controling my hunger than anything else (like extending life expectancy, and weird shit like that). I'm trying to lose weight, if at all possible. So that's the primary goal with it for me. It doesn't mess with my metabolism, but rather an intermittent fasting (or "IF") program helps to increase my secretion of growth hormone (which is a primary fat burning hormone), which has been proven through tests to increase significantly through fasting. It also helps to decrease fasting insulin levels. This, in turn, helps release stored triglycerides, which gives the body more of a chance to burn those stored fats.

I had some blood work done last week, as a marker at the 3 month point of me living this Primal Blueprint way. Now, the last time I had any blood work done was 2 years ago, because the numbers were so depressing at that point that I was all, "Fuck it!" and didn't want to really pay attention to it all for a bit. But here's how the big stuff compares:

2010 Numbers
Cholesterol - total: 190
Triglycerides: 192
HDL Cholesterol (i.e. the good kind): 41
LDL Cholesterol (bad kind): 111

2012 Numbers
Cholesterol - total: 235
Triglycerides: 142
HDL Cholesterol (i.e. the good kind): 57
LDL Cholesterol (bad kind): 150

LDL cholesterol numbers can vary from day to day (even hour to hour) depending on how you ate the day before, exercise, the fact that that was in a "high" range this time around doesn't bother me. I don't really give 2 shits about my LDL, actually.

What I DO care about is that my triglycerides are way lower than they were 2 years ago. The nurse practitioner even asked me what I was doing to get that number down! I told her about Primal Blueprint, and she said she was going to Google it when I left. :D

Also, the HDL being SO high is really awesome. It means my liver and gallbladder are processing fats really well. And having a healthy liver (and processing fats properly!) is super-important in my world.

I don't really care about longevity of life. I care more about quality of life. And I feel good, and happy, and I'll be checking my numbers again in another few months to see where they stand.

A smizing example...

I'm discussing "smizing" with some folks on another message board I frequent. So I need to share some examples of what I'm talking about so that they can see that normal every day folk, like me!, can smize with the best of 'em...

Ok, so here's me showing the Twin how we look when we just take a picture without making an effort. Ho hum...
And then I SMIZE, and we looked at the pic so I could show her how it was different:
And then SHE tried to smize, and lo and behold, a new smizer was born!

Yes, her's was a more suspicious smize, but it takes practice. So that wasn't bad for the first go, IMO.

Old mover from last year is STILL able to raise my blood pressure!

Last week, a coworker and I were talking about our favorite Jimmy Stewart films. He's partial to It's A Wonderful Life. I told him that if we're talking movies where Jimmy was the star, then my favorite has to be Mr Smith Goes To Washington. But I love him in The Philadelphia Story as a balance to the Hepburn character. He told me he hadn't seen it, so I told him I have a copy I can lend him.

That night, I checked through my DVD collection to pick out the movie to take to work with me on Monday. But it wasn't there.

In fact, all of my favorite old movies weren't on the shelf. Correction: there are exactly two of my favorite old movies on the shelf...Roman Holiday, and Casablanca.

Every one of my old movies outside of those are GONE. (The Philadelphia Story, Charade, Breakfast At Tiffany's, Funny Face, Bringing Up Baby, The Maltese Falcon, etc, etc...) They must've been in one of the boxes that were lost forever, thanks to the incompetence of our mover, Joab.

It still gets me fired up to think about it. Which is so stupid, I know, but dammit...that guy just chaps my hide!

I need therapy...

What's in a name?

I went to pick up a prescription over the weekend from our local pharmacy. I pulled up to the drive-thru window and said, “I’m picking up my prescription I called in. Name is Faith Smith.” The tech punched in my name, and then was gone for a bit while she gathered it together I assume, and then another tech came over to give me my total due, and then slid the drawer out for me to put my debit card in. He asked me to verify my address, and I said, “12345 Name St.” And he said, “Ok.” He was busily stapling the prescription info and my receipt to the bag my bottle of pills was in, and asked if I needed to speak to the pharmacist at all. “Nope, I’m good.” And then he put my prescription into the drawer and said, “Ok, I’ll just need you to sign this and you’ll be on your way!”

I thought it was going to be my sales slip, but instead there was a clipboard in the drawer with a big ol’ jumble of prescriptions in 2 bags. I grabbed it all, thinking that maybe the pharmacy had messed up and refilled my birth control pill prescription, too, even though I hadn’t asked for it. I said, “Whoah! What the hell is all this?” And the tech said, “You had four prescriptions.” And I said, “What? No I don’t.” And then I looked at the name on the prescription sheet and saw that they had given me the prescriptions for a Faith Thmith. NOT my Rx for me…Faith SMITH. “Oh! This has happened before. I’m Faith Smith. SMITH. Not Thmith.” And I put the prescription bags back into the drawer as the tech apologized and checked the system for my prescription I’d called in.

Through the glass, they always seem to think I’m saying the Thmith last name there. Drives me nutty. But in the past, the tech has always said, “There isn’t an order for Faith Thmith.” And then I have to restate my name, and it gets all cleared up. This was the first time that this other Faith and I had our Rx in on the same day.

Anyway, I said to the tech this time that I would have thought my address verification would have been the final clue on the prescription mix up. “Why did I give you my address if not for you to double check that you had the right script?” (The address for the Thmith chick was on 126th Terrace. NOT on “Name St”. Pretty distinct difference, IMO!) He apologized again and said that he had voided the transaction, and had charged my card for the correct amount. I thanked him, and then we were on our way.

I can totally understand why they get our names mixed up there. The last names sound pretty similar even when they aren’t being said through a mediocre speaker system. But DAMN. I am curious as hell about what that chick is taking now! I mean, she had to SIGN something in order to get the prescriptions from the pharmacy! What does she taaaaake???

I feel like a half-naked Amazon woman

Today is the first day in about a year, or so, where I've worn a skirt without any kind of leggings on under it.

And also a pair of strappy heels instead of my usual ballet-flat I've grown accustomed to.

I feel 8 feet tall. And like I need to keep checking my legs for any bruises that I was unaware of having. (Hence the need for the leggings a lot of the time. I bruise easily. Sometimes, I swear I must bruise myself when I change positions in bed when I'm sleeping, because I honestly have no idea how else I get them!)

But, there are no bruises. Just white, white, WHITE legs sticking out from under my cute gray skirt!

This is the first time in my life that I have had a noticeable change to my style of clothing I prefer to wear. Up until last year, I was all about finding the most comfortable high heels that I could buy. I like being tall, but I'm not happy being tall at the expense of my foot comfort. I can't pretend to not be in pain. Doesn't work. So I have a fair amount of high heels in my closet that range from the strappy sandal-types I have on today to boots to very awesome ones from Victoria's Secret that I haven't worn in a while because they're REALLY high. And they looked weird with leggings. So, yeah.

I also wear leggings just about every day. Under skirts or dresses, and generally with a ballet flat of some sort. Or my Vans.

I think the style change came from when my workplace started allowing us to wear jeans every day, if we wanted to. I got more casual, as did many of my coworkers. Not in a vulgar way (although I have seen my fair share of sweatshirts and even a pair of yoga pants once that I felt were significantly out of place), but more in a relaxed way. It took a little adjustment time, but we've all settled well into a business casual area, I think.

And while this is the first time that I've noticed the change in my style, I know that it's changed about a gazillion times before now. Like when I dressed mildly goth from about sophomore year in high school through at least the beginning of my sophomore year in college. Then I started mixing in what I look back on as being relatively skanky clothes (I was skinnier than I'd ever been before), but still had the goth mix at least once a week. And then I can't remember what I did for a while. Hmmm.

And then there was the overalls phase. That lasted a good long while, too. ::sigh:: I wasn't alone! It was the 90's, for chrissakes!

Anyway, it's weird to be so aware of the change, is my point. Looking good has always been important to me, regardless of what the style is that I choose. But now, I'm more into comfort. Boxy tops with a tighter (but not TIGHT-tight) fit to my jeans. I like them folded into a cuff of some sort at the bottom. And then a flat sandal or ballet shoe, a la Audrey Hepburn-ish kind of styling.

Dresses that can be worn with or without leggings, depending on the weather. Pull on style. No zippers required!

It's easy, is the thing. But not in a sloppy way.

I wonder how long this phase will last...
